The journey of the sun intrigued the ancient Egyptians like you wouldn’t believe. They were fascinated by where it had come from, how it moved and where it went when the night descended. One concept that has remained consistent through Ancient Egyptian lore was that after the sun passed below the western horizon, it ventured into the pocket of another realm – a dangerous realm full of demons, monsters and the dead themselves… It was known as the Duat, and to the Egyptians, not even the sun itself was safe from those who dwelled there and never was there a guarantee that the sun would rise from this ghastly dwelling. So if even the sun – the very star that brought light, warmth and life was threatened by the Duat, what chance would an ordinary human have of passing through such a bleak realm, and better yet could one even survive there?

Described as a ‘Great President’ of Hell, the demon Marbas is the first demon in Ars Goetia that does not conform to the royal European standard of hierarchy. He is also a demon that seemingly manages to elude the demonic classification by Collin de Plancy in his Dictionnaire Infernal, making him unique to Ars Goetia. However, if we look at Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, we do see Marbas – a Great President – appear under the name ‘Barbas’, which suggests that this demon went by two different, yet similar sounding names.

Much of what we know of Aztec society relies upon several pictorial codices, some of which were interpreted by Spaniards of the early colonial period. The Codex Mendoza – a pictorial and alphabetic text written in the 16th century gives us a glimpse of what life for the ancient Aztecs may have been like, as well as revealing to us what customs they adhered to in their society. From what we can gather from a codex such as this, those who considered cheating on their spouses, might’ve been too afraid to even risk it.

So it’s probably about time we looked at the Book of Giants. Having already done an extensive series on the Book of Enoch (section 1, at least) I thought it would be both interesting and imperative to get the perspective of the giants, most notably Mahway. After all, these creatures never asked to be born and whilst they are most certainly evil, it would seem that there is more to them than just savage monsters, as the Book of Enoch tells us.

From my research, there exists two versions of the Book of Giants. First there is the one found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and secondly, there is the one found in Manichean. The Dead Sea Scroll version is arguably incomplete with its abrupt and almost vague ending, but the Manichean version provides a more definitive conclusion. In my efforts to convey a full story, I’ll aim to conflate the two accounts and hopefully paint a more concise story for you.

Many of you will likely know of Horus as the falcon headed God who not only avenged his murdered father by defeating his evil tyrannical uncle Set, but also ascending the throne of Egypt as the King of the Gods. Horus, whose name meant ‘he who is above’ possessed a body that symbolised the heavens themselves, whilst his eyes were also believed to be the sun and the moon respectively, in some beliefs. Considering his feats in the mythology, you’d be forgiven for thinking of Horus as a hero – a man who stood out from the shadow of his usurped father and not only honoured his memory, but delivered vengeance upon the culprit. In its simplest telling, Horus is a hero and he does overcome his uncle’s wickedness… but to say he did it all by himself would be untrue and to say he did it without… getting his hands dirty… would be even more untrue. Indeed, there exists a story that brings a whole new meaning to… tossing a salad.

The goal of the deceased ancient Egyptian was to reach the kingdom of Osiris – heaven if you will, where he or she might bask in the glory of the Fields of Rushes – a lush place for well-behaved souls.

Of course, getting there was a different matter entirely, for you’d first have to traverse through the Duat – the hellish underworld full of booby traps, demons, an army of savage baboons and of course a lake of fire.

Ancient Greek geographer Pausanias tells us in his book ‘Descriptions of Greece’, that athletes, their family and their trainers would swear oaths upon slices of boar flesh that they would not do anything that would illegally affect the state of the Olympic Games. Put simply, they promised not to cheat. But cheating did happen, as Pausanias speaks of accounts of athletes bribing officials, physically harming their competition or even cursing each other.
