One of the most terrifying thing about the movie Incantation is how it incorporates esoteric Buddhist culture into its lore. We get temples, villages, symbols, chants and hand symbols that to the untrained eye, may seem like they belong in some rural, religious cult. And indeed, it does have that effect of making the whole story seem more plausible – like there could be this vengeful goddess preying on mortals or that there is some ancient curse that’s so obscure no one has heard of it. As we dive into today’s episode, we’ll explore how much of the movie was inspired from real world mythology and culture, as well as establishing some links to a pre-existing deity that might be comparable to the ominous Mother Buddha!
