Deep down in the depths of the Aztec underworld, the land of the dead, is a deity so feared that the Aztec empire would make human sacrifices to appease him. A 6-foot tall, skeletal being, with empty sockets where eyes should rest. Those that perish, face a 4-year journey through the 9 levels of the underworld to meet him. Well, contrary to popular belief, the Jinn, or genie as we say in the western world, is not a blue, magical, singing and dancing, hyperactive, supernatural entity as awesome as that would be. Nor are they found in brass lamps, ready to grant 3 wishes as popularised by the book of One Thousand and One Nights, or the greatest film of all time, Aladdin. Instead, they are complex spirits, who fall on both sides of good and evil, often mischievous, and highly unpredictable.

The Epic of Gilgamesh tells story of the ancient odyssey of a legendary king. Originally written in Akkadian on 12 incomplete tablets, the story is full of twist and surprises that often pit men against beasts, monsters and even the gods themselves.

Found in the 19th century the Turkish Assyriologist Hormuzd Rassam at Nineveh in the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, the tablets were a wonder then and they’re a wonder now. With that, it’s my pleasure to bring you a brand new series starting in August where I’ll be retelling the story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu and explaining everything that transpires.
