The Norse pantheon is filled with beings and deities that are divine, wonderous and at times, terrifying. From Thor, the superstar A-Lister, the Dwayne Johnson of the Scandinavian folklore, to the Draugr, their version of the walking dead, it certainly would have been quite the place to reside. The Vikings believed that the physical death was not the end. For those who had proved themselves worthy in life and battle, the great halls of Valhalla awaited in the glorious kingdom of the gods known as Asgard. There, the dead – now glorious, eternal beings, dined with the gods and goddesses themselves and lived on forever knowing no pain and having no want. But in some ancient beliefs, the afterlife was a much more immediate endeavour, in that whilst the spirit might have made it to the heavens, the corpse of the deceased remained in the grave….where it was reanimated with a strange, ethereal power.

Gilgamesh is believed to be the oldest poem in the world – its very origins pre-dating the Iliad or even the Bible. The baked clay tablets in which the poem survives on, once lay buried in the rubble in sites across the ancient Near East, broken and forgotten. It wasn’t until 1850 when these tablets were discovered and it would be another fifteen years before they even got the attention they deserved. In this series, I’ll be retelling the Gilgamesh story in its entirety and whilst this endeavour will be entirely original, I will be drawing on inspiration from the translations by Andrew George and Stephen Mitchell to help illustrate what might be one of the most profound things I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

As a merchant in medieval Europe, you may have wanted to weigh your wares to determine how much stock you had. Farmers were also known to weigh crops, food and livestock at such facilities. But as the witch hunt hysteria took hold of 17th century Europe, these facilities – these ‘weigh houses’ would obtain a secondary function – to condemn witches.

Or maybe that’s women?…. Well, in the Japanese folklore story of Kiyohime, the daughter of a manor official, they are essentially one in the same. The folk tale sees us follow our protagonist Anchin – a humble buddhist monk on a pilgrimage to the Kumano shrine in the southern side of the Kii Province. But what appears to be a simple journey turns deadly, for when Kiyohime, the regal daughter of a steward sets her sights on him, she is not prepared to take no for answer. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, the old adage tells us, and perhaps in this case, it is true.

There’s an idea that exists that at some point in history, the church suppressed several texts and shielded our eyes from some of the more dubious and salacious antics of biblical characters. Supposedly, the figures who have been a mainstay influence for countless generations possess a darker, more insidious side to them and those who have since been perceived as perfect and pious are actually flawed and depraved. So according to this idea, the church sought to cover up the fables that might ruin their saviours. They banned certain books, burned volumes en masse and in some cases buried the contents of these darkly delectable texts in unmarked areas of the desert. So what were they trying to hide?…

According to the Chester Beatty Papyri, the gods Horus and Set went to war in order to determine who was the rightful ‘king’. Indeed, they battled as you might have expected them to, but one salacious detail of their rivalry is often overlooked.
