One of the most terrifying thing about the movie Incantation is how it incorporates esoteric Buddhist culture into its lore. We get temples, villages, symbols, chants and hand symbols that to the untrained eye, may seem like they belong in some rural, religious cult. And indeed, it does have that effect of making the whole story seem more plausible – like there could be this vengeful goddess preying on mortals or that there is some ancient curse that’s so obscure no one has heard of it. As we dive into today’s episode, we’ll explore how much of the movie was inspired from real world mythology and culture, as well as establishing some links to a pre-existing deity that might be comparable to the ominous Mother Buddha!

Wild Hunts were thought to have taken place across Europe and would be often characterised by a ghostly group of hunters and their hounds. These ghostly entities were thought to emerge from the woods – or simply, from the air itself – and did not seem to mind who they were bothering. These hunts were said to take place in the forests – usually in the stormiest and winteriest months. Any unlucky soul who happened to stumble upon these supernatural hunting parties, were thought to be swept up and forced to become one of them.

There are as many as five apocryphal books that go by the name ‘Book of Jasher’ – all of which appear to have been forgeries or composed much later than biblical times. In this series, I chose to use the most accessible version of the Book of Jasher I could find as a basis for the narrative, which is translated from Hebrew and dates back to the year 1613. Whilst I did alter the language – most notably the dialogue of the characters, you’ll find that the framework and the story itself remains the same, as well as running mostly parallel to the events of the Old Testament. The Book of Jasher, known in Hebrew as ‘Sepir Ha Yasher’, is believed to mean ‘Book of the Upright’ or ‘the Upright or Correct Record’. What makes the book so controversial is that it was believed in some circles to be a lost book that is mentioned a couple of times in the bible, most notably by Joshua and David respectively.
