PubXtv: The Ancient Babylonian Spirits That Preyed On Children
If we were to travel back to the nights of nearly 4000 years ago, specifically, to Babylon, we might have been warned by our fellow neighbours that something wicked lurked in the dark. According to this ancient Mesopotamian mythology, female spirits, known as the Lilitu, were the bringers of misfortune, diseases and were prone to harm and even murder children. Rooted in the cultural and religious beliefs of early Mesopotamian societies, it was such a demon like the Lilitu that reflected their attempts to explain and personify the unknown dangers of their environment. By examining the Lilitu’s characteristics and its role within ancient superstition, we can gain insight into how the people of Sumeria, Assyria and Babylon may have dealt with misfortune and tragedy – especially when it came to the loss of their children.
